ITM Adam,
Here’s some background on what’s happening with Justin Trudeau in Canadia.
Last Monday, his Finance Minister, Chrystia Freeland, resigned from cabinet in protest after she was told by Trudeau that he wanted to replace her with Mark Carney, the former governor of the Bank of Canada, and Bank of England.
His caucus is now in open revolt, with many of them calling on him to resign for the good of the Liberal Party.
The opposition parties who were keeping the Liberals in power with their minority in Parliament have all called for Trudeau to resign.
The issues now are around timing and procedure. Parliament is not sitting until February, so there won’t be any opportunity for a confidence vote to trigger an election.
There is also the threat of a 25% tariff from Trump when he is inaugurated in January.
My prediction is that in new year, Trudeau announces he will resign and that a new leader will be elected by the Liberal party members to run in the election that must happen by October 2025.
The only question is if he tries to stay on in the interim to provide continuity in negotiations with Trump, but everyone knows Trump hates him so that argument from him would be weak.
The walls are finally closing in. Trudeau hung on to power for too long and now his party is projected to fall to 4th place based on recent polling. If the Liberal caucus does choose an interim leader, I predict Dominic LeBlanc will be the Prime Minister.
LeBlanc was just named as the Finance Minister, and was at Mar-a-lago with Trudeau to meet with Trump last month He was also Justin Trudeau’s baby sitter when he was a child as his father served in Pierre Elliot Trudeau’s cabinet.
Merry Christmas!
