I don’t usually speak up when I hear people recommend the suicide
hotline, but I feel a kinship with your audience enough to speak up this
time. One of your donors in the last show tragically lost their child
to suicide, and recommended people in danger reach out to the hotline.
My
wife and I have a friend who has had serious mental health issues and
called the hotline about two years ago. After spilling her guts to the
people on the other end of the phone, she hung up feeling like she could
get through it. Unfortunately, the person on the other end of the line
took it upon themselves to report her to child services, and she’s been
fighting ever since then to not have her kids taken away.
I
don’t know if this is an actual policy of the hotline or just a rogue
employee, but ‘trying to get help’ has turned into a nightmare for her.
I
don’t know if that’s something you want to share with your audience,
but I thought it an important enough anecdote to send it your way.
